Mason Metz continued his early-season power feast with a second straight 2-homer outing to lead another Avonworth run barrage, as the Varsity Baseball squad swept the season series with South Allegheny, claiming a 15-4 verdict in 5 innings in McKeesport Wednesday.
Cooper Scharding led the game off with a round-tripper to center field. Two batters later, Metz picked up where he left off Monday against the Gladiators as he destroyed a 1-0 offering with a line drive over the right field fence. In his next at bat, in the second inning, Metz did it again, concluding an 8-pitch at bat with a bomb to center field to stake the Lopes to a 9-0 lead. Along with his two homers Monday, Metz went yard in four consecutive at-bats.
Carson Franc was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 rbi. Alex Rowe added 3 hits, and Michael Libbon had a 4-rbi afternoon. Scharding and Case Latore each added a double. Franc took the mound for the Lopes and went the distance, allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits and 4 walks while striking out 3.
The win runs Avonworth’s record to 9-1. Weather permitting, an exciting non-conference tilt awaits the Lopes Friday, as they travel to face Pine-Richland, another WPIAL team enjoying early season success. Game time is 4:15 PM.
