David R. Williams Gymnasium

On January 19, 2002 the Avonworth High School gymnasium was renamed the David R. Williams gymnasium, in honor of the late David Williams. David Williams had a 30-year career at Avonworth, serving as a social studies/English teacher from 1961 to 1972, then serving as the guidance counselor from 1972 until January 1996. He was also the coach for both the boy’s and girl’s basketball teams during his tenure. During his 10 years with the boys team, he led them to 5 section titles, with many of his players going on to be successful players in college. During his career as the girl’s coach he won three more section titles, as well as 3 straight WPIAL Championships. After retiring from the team in 1995, he had an astonishing record of 123 wins and 37 loses with the girl’s basketball team.

The William’s family donated money to the Avonworth Communities Together, which is a non-profit organization that supports projects the school wouldn’t be able to afford.

David passed away in the spring of 1996, and many of his past students and players are said to have spoke very fondly of him. Doug Williams, David’s son, said that his father saw his students as people, rather than just players. David was a beloved member of the Avonworth community and is shown through the name of the gymnasium. David and the rest of the Williams family will be remembered for their generosity, kindness, and heart for many more years to come.
