Carson Franc dominated on the mound, Mason Metz and Jack Dolan homered, and Avonworth Varsity Baseball captured the Section 2-3A regular season title with a 6-1 victory over South Park Wednesday at home.
Franc surrendered 2 hits in the top of the first inning, but left the runners stranded and proceeded to hold South Park hitless from the 2ndto the 5th inning, the only subsequent hit being a rocket up the middle that just missed his glove. The Eagles eked out a run to take a 1-0 lead in the second, but they barely laid a glove on Franc the rest of the way, as the junior hurler mixed speeds and locations, going the distance and striking out 12 against only 1 walk.
At bat, Avonworth spread the wealth, scoring with small ball and big blasts behind several multi-hit performances. The Lopes tied the game at 1 in their half of the 2nd inning as Nick Blackson, running for Franc as a courtesy runner, stole second, advanced to third on Michael Libbon’s single, and scored on Patrick Bykwoski’s productive groundout to shortstop. In the bottom of the 3rd, with Metz on after a single, Dolan sent a 3-1 pitch soaring into the blue and over the right field fence to put the Lopes up 3-1. Avonworth increased the lead in the bottom of the 4th when Franc scored on Declan Ehrin’s productive groundout to short. In the top of the 5th, Metz drilled his 9th homer of the season, a solo shot to right that put the Lopes up 5-1. Avonworth finished their scoring in the bottom of the 6th when Bykowski ripped a line-drive double (his second of the game) down the right field line, scoring Libbon, who had singled and stolen.
The win leaves Avonworth with a 9-1 record in section play, their only setback coming against South Park Monday (the Eagles finish 8-2). With their overall record 15-3, the Lopes close out the regular season Thursday in non-conference action at Mars, with the first pitch scheduled for 4 PM.
