Antelopes News · May 12Avonworth Varsity Baseball finished off the regular season with a 3-2 road win over 5A powerhouse Pine-Richland Thursday, May 8th. Mason Metz and Jack Dolan had two hits each, while Cooper Scharding (2.2 IP, 0 runs, 0 hits) and Carson Franc (4.1 IP, 2 runs, 4 K, 1 BB) made a rare joint appearance to stifle the Rams from the mound.The Lopes packed their runs into the top of the third. Dolan’s hard grounder down the first base line hit the bag and leaped into right field for a double, scoring Scharding to make it 1-0. The Lopes made it 2-0 when Alex Rowe reached on an error, scoring Metz, and Franc roped a single to left to score Dolan to run the score to 3-0.Pine-Richland pitching tightened up after that, and their defense turned several well-hit balls into loud Avonworth outs. Antelopes News · May 7For those current 8th graders through 11th grade (juniors) interested in trying out next fall for the High School Girls Volleyball Team. Open gyms will be starting Next Thursday, May 15th from 5-7pm at the High School Gym. Prior to that first open gym there will be a 30 minute meeting to review the summer plans and tryout dates. This meeting will take place in the cafeteria outside the High School gym at 4:30pm. Antelopes News · May 2Avonworth Varsity baseball used two big innings to defeat host Mars 8-4, Thursday night at Mars. Alex Rowe and Cooper Scharding went 3 for 3 (with 3 steals for Scharding), Jack Dolan notched two triples, and the Lopes used timely pitching and defense to send the Planets down to defeat. Celebrating their Senior Night, Mars found themselves with a golden opportunity early, loading the bases with no outs in the first. But Avonworth starter Sam Zahn got a clutch strikeout for the first out; 3B Case Latore and SS Declan Ehrin got the second and third outs as they made plays at third and short, respectively, and nailed Mars runners at home on consecutive forceouts to leave the Planets scoreless. Antelopes News · May 2Carson Franc dominated on the mound, Mason Metz and Jack Dolan homered, and Avonworth Varsity Baseball captured the Section 2-3A regular season title with a 6-1 victory over South Park Wednesday at home.Franc surrendered 2 hits in the top of the first inning, but left the runners stranded and proceeded to hold South Park hitless from the 2ndto the 5th inning, the only subsequent hit being a rocket up the middle that just missed his glove. The Eagles eked out a run to take a 1-0 lead in the second, but they barely laid a glove on Franc the rest of the way, as the junior hurler mixed speeds and locations, going the distance and striking out 12 against only 1 walk. At bat, Avonworth spread the wealth, scoring with small ball and big blasts behind several multi-hit performances. Avonworth congrats Kacey Lavelle on her athletic commitment

Antelopes News · Apr 30Congratulations to Kacey LaVelle on her commitment to Penn State Behrend, where she will swim at the collegiate level while pursuing a degree in nursing. Kacey has been involved in competitive swimming for more than 11 years and was a four-year varsity swimmer for Avonworth. She qualified for WPIALs three years in a row and made it to the PIAA State Championships during her junior year. In addition, she competed with RESY YMCA during her senior season, qualifying for both Districts and States. She also ran varsity cross country for four years and looks forward to continuing her swimming and academic career at Behrend. Best of Luck, Kacey!

Antelopes News · Apr 29South Park handed Avonworth Varsity Baseball its first section loss of the season Monday night, as the host Eagles recovered from a big early inning and held off a furious Lopes comeback to prevail 8-7. That sets up a winner-take-all contest for the section title between the teams Tuesday at Avonworth at 4:30. Avonworth struck the first blow in the top of the 2nd inning when Cooper Scharding deposited a base hit down the right field line to score Michael Libbon and Patrick Bykowski. Three batters later, Jack Dolan’s bases-loaded double put Avonworth up 5-0.
